anne is a French artist who has been living in Asia for almost
twenty years now. She studied graphic arts in Paris and began her career in
advertisement drawing and clothes design. But painting had captivated her since
childhood and remained the primary draw in her life. As a matter of fact she
describes herself as “having been born with a brush in her hand”.
Since the 1990‘s she has been painting continuously and she held her first
exhibition in 1995 in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she lived at the time. Exhibiting
has since become a regular feature, in Hong Kong and now Singapore, where she
moved back at the end of the 1990s. (cf. list of exhibitions). For the first time, she exhibits in New York in 2006.
Anne’s early figurative style has evolved towards abstract inspiration,
and her talent shines through the color associations on her canvases where the
importance of her main theme, “passages”, is evidenced by the doorframes
and windows featured .
Her medium is oil ; Through her colors and shapes she beckons the art lover
to discover, beyond the lines and sheens, the hidden meaning in her works. Anne
always hesitates to name her paintings, and would rather let the onlooker define
what touches him in a work, be it very different from what he came for…
A British art critic writing about her work describes this approach as “a
sign of freedom, a gift from the artist to all those who appreciate her paintings.“
Anne’s work has been strongly influenced by Asian painting, and more particularly
so by Indonesian painting. She discovered the flamboyant color schemes and mysticism
inherent to the works of the great painters of Indonesia. And so her art suggests,
through the means of doors and windows a depth and a dimension where each can
wander on his own, and find what he is looking for.
And what to make of her kaleidoscopic forests, impenetrable behind the profusion
of colors? What’s hidden behind those trees? Trees that some will see
as buildings in gigantic cities, cities to get lost in , the better to find
one’s way…. after many meanders!
At the heart of the many canvases which have attracted enlightened art lovers
as well as amateurs seduced by the arrays of colors, we find what makes Anne’
talent and originality: her ability to master apparently very opposite colors
and turn them into harmonies that ravish the eyes and never leave the observer
indifferent. Some might be startled but Anne will respond that life is color,
and that learning to communicate with it will bring a better perception of everyday
life’s facets.
